Cutting onions without tears
La William Tartare is made with real onions. This vegetable is a member of the garlic family and has a strong taste and smell.
The smell originally served to prevent animals from eating the plant. The same smell is also responsible for making you cry when you cut it. Wearing swimming goggles, for instance, will not help! If you are overcome by the smell, try not to rub your eyes. There's a good chance you'll get juice from your hands in your eyes, which will only make it worse.
Keeping your onions in the fridge can help. Cutting cold onions releases less sulphur, saving your eyes from tears.Read more great stories!
